Some Valid Questions for First Time Adult Diaper Wearers

You might be thinking: “Why should I have to fool with a diaper? I don’t want to wear a baby diaper! Even if I did wear adult diapers, I would be too embarrassed to buy adult diapers and buy adult diaper supplies.” I will attempt to address these issues and more in this article.

Bladder Control Pads May Be All You Need

If you have a slight “dribble” problem, or light overnight incontinence, an adult diaper may not be what you need. Bladder control pads may be more suited to you. These are liners that fit inside your normal underwear. They have an adhesive backing on one side and a highly absorbent soft material on the other. Any urinary leakage that you have will be absorbed and wicked away from your skin. In most cases this prevents any diaper rash condition from occurring. They can be worn undetected by others. These pads come in various sizes (thicknesses) to meet varying incontinence protection needs.

Heavy Incontinence Requires More Substantial Protective Underwear

If you have medium to heavy incontinence, you will need to seriously consider wearing an adult diaper of some kind. The alternative is unthinkable – secluding yourself at home or wetting yourself in public. The great news is: Anti-incontinence technology is so advanced that these diapers are both comfortable and can be worn in public undetected. Also, they are easily changed in a standard restroom. You can carry on with your life, with no one the wiser!

You Are Not A Big Baby If You Wear An Adult Diaper!

Urinary incontinence is occasionally the result of some drastic medical procedures such as prostate surgery, or in some cases as a result of the stretching of the bladder and surrounding tissues during pregnancy, or even the result of the normal aging process. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. It just happens! The adult diaper is a larger version of the baby diaper, but wearing one does not mean you are childish. We may have the incontinence issues that babies have but the causes are different. And we, as adults, can make our own choices to solve our problems. Babies can’t do that!

Your Health And Personal Care Is Critical For A High Quality Life

The choices you make to handle your incontinence issues, whether it be buying incontinence pads, disposable adult diapers, adult cloth diapers, adult incontinence briefs, or other protective underwear options can have a major impact on the quality of your life. Other adult diaper products can make your life easier too. Study, make choices wisely and remain active!

These diapers must be changed more often, and you will have to wash them, but the cost savings really add up. If you are a home caregiver on a budget, and the incontinent patient or loved one is bedfast, cloth diapers is your best solution.

We recommend Adult Cloth Diapers .com as the best value. They have been in business since 1990, and manufacture their own brand of high quality diapers and diapering products. They are a “family owned” business and are a recognized leader in the incontinence product industry.

Adult Disposable Diapers

Although disposable diapers cost more than cloth diapers, there are many advantages in both convenience and some health issues. They do not require changing as often, they do not require washing, and since they wick liquids away from the body there can be less incidence of diaper rash.

We recommend Amazon .com for disposable diapers. They are a high volume source and therefore can offer their products at lower prices. Since these are packaged items and are the same no matter where you buy them, we feel that Amazon is the best choice for disposable adult diapers.

Adult Plastic Pants – Plastic Pants For Adults and Adult Diapers Save you $$$

Adult plastic pants, also called “adult diaper cover”, and once called “adult rubber pants” can be used in combination with adult diapers, of any type, to make a very secure swim diaper. More commonly plastic pants for adults may be used in the more traditional way, that is, as a protective waterproof shield over a cloth diaper.

Urinary incontinence in adults is very common today. The demand for personal incontinence accessories, such as “special protection” underwear, is very great. Fortunately adult diapers and other incontinence products are plentiful. In fact, there are so many choices of diapering types and styles that it is often difficult to pick from among them.

Using cloth diapers and “adult plastic pants and panties” is a great protective underwear option for saving you money. It would seem a simple task to find the right size cloth diapers and pants, but this is not always the case.

The best selection of quality plastic pants and panties that I have found is at Adult Cloth They have a large selection of the Leakmaster brand of plastic pants, in many styles, made with your comfort in mind. They have heavy duty adult pull-on plastic pants, high back, bikini style, snap on, heavy weight, and they will even do special order if you are hard to fit.

You can find plastic or vinyl covers with or without a fabric lining and in many different colors.

To get the most wear out of your waterproof covers, purchase the proper size. Use your waist size and leg size to get the best fit. Each “size category” is associated with a “range”.
For example :

  • Pant Size: Adult Large
  • Waist Width: 29″ to 48″
  • Leg Width: 19″ to 26″
  • Crotch Width: 12″

Your best fit will be toward the center of the size charts. If any of your measurements are outside the chart ranges, you may need custom pants or panties to get a snug comfortable fit and prevent leakage. A better fitting pair of pants will also insure a longer product life.

As a side note, it is always better to buy diapering accessories, and incontinence products, such as plastic pants for adults, in bulk to get the greatest savings. This cloth diaper and adult plastic pants strategy can save you hundreds of dollars per year.

Adult Diaper Rash – Tips For Treating Diaper Rash

Coping With Rash Symptoms

In the last article “Adult Diaper Rash – How To Prevent It” we learned there are things we can do to prevent diaper rash. However, no matter how hard we try, we will inevitably encounter diaper rash. So, how do we treat adult diaper rash? How do we reduce the pain and make the dermatitis go away? What products are available?

Keep Applying Those Prevention Techniques!

The best way to treat adult diaper rash is to stick with the prevention guidelines mentioned in the previous article. To recap, keep the rash and surrounding area clean and dry. This can be accomplished by frequently checking for a soiled diaper and changing it if necessary.

Remember, urine and stool material are not the only irritants that can aggravate this medical condition. For stubborn skin rashes, change “diaper types” or change soaps to see if the rash gets less red and is less painful. You will need to experiment with this a little.

Try A Topical Ointment

Use a topical ointment or cream like A&D ointment or zinc oxide on the rash. This will act as a moisture barrier and also discourage bacteria growth that could cause infection. Neosporin will help fight the infection, but some people experience a sensitivity or allergic reaction.

Keep The Affected Area Clean

Gently wash the rash area using plain water or a mild soap. The rash area should also be left undiapered for 5 to 10 minutes, to allow the skin to fully dry before reapplying the diaper.

Use a Sitz Bath

Healing can be enhanced by soaking the rash area in a warm sitz bath for 15 to 20 minutes twice a day. Sitting in a bathtub works well also. This is soothing and it allows more blood flow in the rash area to aid the body’s healing process. Pat dry the skin after soaking and don’t wear a diaper for 5 to 10 minutes to assure thorough drying. Portable sitz baths are available at drugstores and medical supply stores.

Don’t Use Powders To Dry The Bottom

Do not put baby power or cornstarch on the rash to dry the bottom! Do not put them inside the diaper! These powders collect moisture and allow bacteria to breed.

The best advise? Don’t get “adult diaper rash” in the first place! If you do develop diaper rash, make sure your diaper is always clean and dry. Use an ointment as a moisture barrier. Experiment with different diaper types, soaps, etc. and reduce the discomfort by using a sitz bath if possible. Continue to stay clean and dry.

Adult Diaper Rash – How To Prevent It

Diaper Rash – What Is It?

Adult diaper rash is seen more often today than in the past because more adults have urinary incontinence and fecal incontinence. Diaper rash is a type of contact dermatitis or skin irritation. It is indicated by redness, sometimes red bumps and in more extreme cases even blisters or open sores.

What Causes Adult Diaper Rash?

Many things can cause diaper rash. Often the most likely culprits are acids in urine and fecal material laying directly on the skin. However, some people have a sensitivity or even an allergy to perfumes and odor suppressants in disposable diapers. Some are sensitive to soap and fabric softener residues left in cloth diapers after washing. The wrong size diaper, one that doesn’t fit properly, is one cause of adult diaper rash. However, moisture and chemical skin irritants are most often the cause. Some people have a sensitivity to the “wipes” used to clean the body after the soiled diaper has been removed.

Can This Contact Dermatitis Be Dangerous?

If diaper rash is left untreated, a secondary infection can occur so it is extremely important to a) take steps to prevent diaper rash and b) if the rash occurs, start proper treatment promptly.

What Do I Do First To Prevent This Rash?

The most important thing a care giver can do to prevent adult diaper rash is to keep the diapered area clean and dry. You should expect to change the diaper about 6 to 8 times every day to prevent a long exposure to toxic irritants. Said in another way, you should check the condition of the diaper every 3 to 4 hours. Actually it is best to change the diaper immediately after it is soiled. This will remove the toxic substances that cause the irritation before they do any damage.

Don’t Disposable Adult Diapers Prevent Diaper Rash?

No. If you buy adult diapers and you choose disposable diapers, you may be able to go longer between changings, because the absorptive gels in these types of diapers wick the urine away from the body. However, many diapers are not hypoallergenic and the chemicals the manufacturer adds to prevent odor can cause a rash in some diaper users. Some people do not have a sensitivity to these substances while others do. So, if you are keeping the diapered area dry and there is still a rash that doesn’t want to go away, try another brand of disposable diaper or even cloth diapers for a while. If you try all these tips and the rash does not show signs of improvement in 3 or 4 days, you should seek medical help.

Don’t Cloth Diapers Promote Diaper Rash?

No. If you buy adults diapers and your choice is cloth diapers, make sure that you wash them in a very mild soap like Dreft. Don’t use fabric softeners. And, use two rinse cycles in order to make sure all the soap has been removed. I have heard that changing the PH of the diaper by putting vinegar in the last rinse cycle also helps, but I don’t know this to be a fact. It can’t hurt though, so if you want to try it add about one ounce of vinegar per gallon of water.

Check For Wetness more often.

Also, if using cloth diapers, you will need to check for dampness more often since the diaper itself does not wick the liquid away from the body but allows it to lay directly on the skin. Ouch! Change the diaper as soon as possible after it has been soiled to prevent diaper rash problems.

Don’t The Plastic Pants Make Diaper Rash Worse?

It can, if you don’t check for wetness often enough. Also, if you are using cloth diapers and have a bad rash, it may be necessary to wear the diaper without plastic pants until the rash heals. Plastic pants do a great job of preventing liquids from getting out of the diaper and on the bed or on clothing. However, it holds heat inside thereby raising the temperature of the diapered area and creating a fertile environment for germs of all kinds. Remember we want to prevent a secondary infection, so, don’t ignore this tip.
